    Dusk and Summer

    Sarah // 26 Aug 2008 - 3:46 pm // Comment? »

1 week from today, I will be entering my last year of high school. It seems pretty scary, but exciting at the same time. When I was younger, I always imagined what it would be like to be older, and being in the 12th grade was like being on top of the world. However, now that it has finally come, I don’t feel as excited as I used to. This year will be a big year for me. I have to choose my Universities, save up money for Prom and finally have to leave high school. Freedom is great, but sometimes I get scared. My friends are what makes going to school so much fun, but when we split off into our own directions, I don’t know if I can bare being away from them. Sure, we can call each other up and hang out out side of classes, but it’s just different when you are sitting in class beside your friend every day. I feel that I might not be ready to let go right now. I will see how strong I will be as the year progresses. It could just be anxiety for the opening of school that is making me think all of this. I should just relax, breathe and enjoy my last year!

    Website Project Previews

    Sarah // 22 Aug 2008 - 5:46 pm // C3mments »

After taking a break from doing some Art for my portfolio, I have been pulling together two website projects that I am currently working on for the past few months. The first company, Ontario Aluminum and Glass, offered me a paid job to help them with their site from the ground up. Below is a preview of the layout I made for the company. I think it suits them very well, especially with the divided graphic in the middle - it looks like a window! The company offers doors and windows, which will look good on my resume or for when I start applying for universities this year. I really want to get into Architecture, so this is a start I guess. Anyhow, the project is still a work in progress, but it is definitely coming together after four months of planning.

Next, a friend and I are working on putting together an information site for Bell Driver Education. They offer courses on safe driving, and so they wanted an online outlet for promotion and information regarding their stuff. Again, I did the test layout you see below. I still have to meet with the manager before anything is final. I do hope they like the layout I made up. It’s blue again since I think blue is a more professional colour.

My aim is to finish these two projects as soon as possible! School starts in a about 11 days, so I am scared I won’t have time for a September launch. However, I know I can get it all done if I set my mind to it…and not get distracted by pointless YouTube videos…

    1/29

    Sarah // 20 Aug 2008 - 12:34 am // C1mment »

The past few days have been quite hectic. I have been doing a few sketching and planning for the big paintings I will finish for my AP Art Portfolio. Right now the count is 1/29. It is sad, I know, to have wasted my summer and only finished 1 good piece. Well, to be technical, the piece is not *finished* but I would consider it 98% done. I need to do some retouching and I will post it up here once I get my scanner fixed. I just wanted to post a small update on this for my own records. Anyways, I have completed line work for 3 pieces right now. So, the next week will be intense painting with watercolour until my hand cramps. Ok, so maybe not that dramatic, but I do need to keep focus and stick to my schedule. Wish me luck? More updates soon!

    Out and About

My father started his summer vacation today, so he decided to take me downtown to buy some new art supplies and to go see some art galleries. It was fun shopping at Curry’s. I love walking in there and smelling the scent of…well ART. There are some really good back-to-school deals, and my heart was set on getting a new portfolio binder for my loose-leaf works. I ended up getting a big mixing pad for my watercolours instead. Along with the mixing pad, I also bought some frisket film for masking my paintings I will be doing this week and some new graphite pencils since my old set are about an inch long and pretty much useless. I need a new sketchbook as well. For someone who seems to need a lot of art supplies, I end up not getting what I want. At least I got what I need right now. I will be sure to come back and buy some more stuff before school opens again. Art class next year will be so intense! Anyways, due to the large volume of rain water that harshly sprinkled us for about 2 hours in the early afternoon, we decided to head home before the rain got worst. To my disappointment, the rain cleared up and allowed sunny skies to shine through right when I got home. Just my luck. I did, however get to past by the Ontario College of Art and Design! The picture to the right was taken in the front yard area. I thought the statue looked pretty cool. I don’t know if I want to go to school there, but I will keep my options opened. Now, tomorrow’s a big day - going to get some serious painting done!

    Starry-Night Scrapbook Preview

    Sarah // 12 Aug 2008 - 12:10 pm // C2mments »

Recently, I have been working on a few projects. My most current project is reviving my old site called Reminiscent Tutorials. RT is a site that provides “how-to” instructions and articles that can help you learn design and web development skills. My intention for this website is to help those who want to learn how to become a web designer and better improve their skills in both designing and coding. When the website was opened last summer, it received a lot of hits and praises by my visitors. This time around, I am re-opening the site after my long inactivity. The new version still has previous material. I will try and work on adding more resources and tutorials as the year progresses.

Above is a preview of the new layout skin for Version 2 called “Starry-Night Scrapbook”. I have no idea where that name came from, but it just popped into my head. It suited the layout for a while, but as I designed it, the colours become lighter rather than midnight dark. I kept the name though, since it seemed nice at the time. I think I will keep this layout theme for a while. It’s fresh, its colourful and I like the simplicity of the design. Coding it in Wordpress, however, is posing quite a challenge for me. I hope it works out in the end though.
